In this 20th edition of Brighton Dynamic:

  • You'll hear how Alice helps people negotiate profitable contracts.
  • You'll discover a locally made product that's making more than £2 million a year helping people to make proposals better.
  • You'll find 9 local events to meet creative, technical & business folk in the area.

If you're in the early stages of building a SaaS, or have a software business that feels a bit stuck you might want to book 20 minutes with Jon. He's on a mission to help more Sussex-based software businesses get to £1 million revenue per year.

Meet Alice Dewar-Mills

Alice Dewar-Mills, is a seasoned commercial director and the founder of Looking Glass Solutions. From her early start at Rolls-Royce during her placement year to her successful stint as a remote worker for nearly 15 years, Alice's journey is a treasure trove of insights and practical knowledge.

  • Understand Alice's philosophy that contracts are just conversations and shouldn't be daunting.
  • Get to know her plans for helping small business owners to make better use of contracts.
  • Delve into her work-life balance strategies.

Jon recently worked with Alice on one of his client's SaaS businesses. She helped create a far better process and starting contract for the team. They're now far more confident about negotiating high-value deals with customers that outgrow self-service plans.

This episode will leave you equipped with a renewed perspective on contracts, negotiation, and remote work.

Check out Better Proposals

One of Better Proposals founders, Adam Hempenstall, grew up in Southwick, near Brighton.

At the end of last year Adam shared that their revenue was over $2.5 million per year with over 8,000 customers and a team of 24. It took them 6 years of working 100% remote to reach this.

As well as building a great product that "helps you make professional proposals in half the time", they take marketing seriously.

"These are numbers that are important to us: trial sign-ups are important, traffic is important, churn is important, [the] number of new customers we do a day is important... And as long as those numbers are kind of generally looked after and they're not completely disastrous, we're all good.”
- Adam in a recent interview

Hundreds of thousands of people each month find Better Proposals when searching for terms like "web design proposal template". Over 200,000 of them in total have signed up for a trial or subscribed to their mailing list.

Better Proposals is currently ranked 18th on our list of successful Sussex SaaS. Know some we're missing? Disagree with the rank? Hit reply to let us know.

Also let us know if you're a customer of BetterProposals. Jon would love to ask you a few (easy!) questions.

Brighton Dynamic from The Skiff I built a thing as fun side project at Urlbox. It's a fresh perspective on the web. A way to explore the top one million homepage screenshots. You can zoom, pan and click to navigate. It's called One Million Screenshots. There are far fewer than one million screenshots in this image There are a surprising number of Sussex based websites among the top one million. For me, browsing around was a little like taking a walk around Brighton and occasionally bumping...

a nostalgic video of when we first got the keys to the The Skiff

Brighton Dynamic from The Skiff This week the first company I started will be 18 years old. Over these 18 years, the company has generated over £2 million in revenue. Despite this, it’s never turned a significant profit or distributed a dividend. On paper, its age might seem like the most impressive thing about it. Financially this is one of many failure modes that businesses fall into. If I'd known what its future was going to look like back in 2006 and understood why I really created it, I...
