Meet Tom Buck

Tom Buck is a programmer and entrepreneur who harnesses the power of open data to create high-traffic websites. From building a site that analyses mobile broadband speeds in the UK to pioneering projects like crimerate.co.uk.

You'll learn how Tom:

  • Transforms massive open data sets into comprehensible insights for the public.
  • Navigates the unpredictable world of SEO with a healthy dose of skepticism.
  • Uses AI tools like ChatGPT to overcome hurdles in creating engaging content.

Tom's websites hold the number 2 and 3 spots of highest traffic websites owned and operated by members of The Skiff with hundreds of thousands of visitors each month.

Don't miss this deep-dive into Tom's fascinating world of data and entrepreneurship.

Check out Touch Stay

One of Touch Stay's founders, Joe Jones, works from The Skiff. He holds the current crown of owning and operating the highest traffic website among Skiffmates.

Inspired to start Touch Stay after a 21 month travelling trip across 3 continents, Joe is a firm believer that the best way to experience any destination is to ask the locals.

While proudly profitable, Touch Stay, raised a seed round to bolster their coffers last year:

It’s the second time we’ve taken a small amount of investment – the first being pre-pandemic when some of our customers fuelled the funding that saw us through an unexpected couple of years... This time, some of those same customers invested again.
From this post in the Touch Stay blog.

Customers really can make the best investors!

They ended 2022 with:

  • 4,800 customers
  • 28,000 active guidebooks
  • 2.3M people having opened and used a Touch Stay digital guidebook

Touch Stay is currently ranked 30th on our list of successful Sussex SaaS. Know some we're missing? Disagree with the rank? Hit reply to let us know.

Also let us know if you're a customer of TouchStay. Jon would love to ask you a few (easy!) questions.

Brighton Dynamic from The Skiff I built a thing as fun side project at Urlbox. It's a fresh perspective on the web. A way to explore the top one million homepage screenshots. You can zoom, pan and click to navigate. It's called One Million Screenshots. There are far fewer than one million screenshots in this image There are a surprising number of Sussex based websites among the top one million. For me, browsing around was a little like taking a walk around Brighton and occasionally bumping...

a nostalgic video of when we first got the keys to the The Skiff

Brighton Dynamic from The Skiff This week the first company I started will be 18 years old. Over these 18 years, the company has generated over £2 million in revenue. Despite this, it’s never turned a significant profit or distributed a dividend. On paper, its age might seem like the most impressive thing about it. Financially this is one of many failure modes that businesses fall into. If I'd known what its future was going to look like back in 2006 and understood why I really created it, I...
