In this 23rd edition of Brighton Dynamic:

  • You'll hear how Stuart got into game development after moving to Sussex.
  • You'll discover a SaaS, with a founder who grew up in Brighton, that has supported 6.98 million players around the world.
  • You'll find 6 local events to meet creative, technical & business folk in the area.

Meet Stuart Wallace

Stuart Wallace is a freelance artist and developer who makes games and apps. Stuart shares his journey moving from Edinburgh to Lewes and from building healthcare mobile apps to 2D and now 3D game development.

You'll learn how he:

  • Divides his day between personal projects and client work.
  • Started out building websites after art collage.
  • Taught himself to programme.
  • Is embarking on phase 3 of his career.

Stuart expounds on the joy of the game-building process and asserts that the creator is the game's ultimate user.

Stuart's one of 85 people who choose to regularly work from The Skiff. Don't forget this week is the best time to join him!

Check out Buzzshot

Tom Parslow, Buzzshot's founder, grew up in Brighton and still lives here today. Between 2016 and 2019 Tom transitioned from £100,000/year freelance web developer to full-time SaaS founder.

2020-21 was a challenge with many of their customers having to stop operations. But with a team of just two and $0 external investment they're doing better than ever:

  • 1,000 years served (Wait, what?)
  • 2,000+ customers
  • >1,000 customers outside the UK.
  • 3,871 Escape Rooms
  • 2.42 million team photos
  • 6.98 million happy players

Tom discovered real problems people running escape rooms were struggling with and solved them:

"People are spending hours a week on doing this. There will be Photoshop, there will be sending out emails. A lot of them don't do SMS, some of them have tried it, but by doing that manually it's really hard. And then there will be people who say like, this is what we plan to do and we haven't done it in weeks, because it would take too long."

As well as being a member of The Skiff for much of his freelancing and SaaS journey, Tom is one of the SaaS founders who will be at SaaS Saturday this weekend (1st July). It would be wonderful to see you there too!

Buzzshot is currently ranked 29th on our list of successful Sussex SaaS. Know some we're missing? Disagree with the rank? Hit reply to let us know.

Also let us know if you're a customer of Buzzshot. Jon would love to ask you a few (easy!) questions.

Brighton Dynamic from The Skiff I built a thing as fun side project at Urlbox. It's a fresh perspective on the web. A way to explore the top one million homepage screenshots. You can zoom, pan and click to navigate. It's called One Million Screenshots. There are far fewer than one million screenshots in this image There are a surprising number of Sussex based websites among the top one million. For me, browsing around was a little like taking a walk around Brighton and occasionally bumping...

a nostalgic video of when we first got the keys to the The Skiff

Brighton Dynamic from The Skiff This week the first company I started will be 18 years old. Over these 18 years, the company has generated over £2 million in revenue. Despite this, it’s never turned a significant profit or distributed a dividend. On paper, its age might seem like the most impressive thing about it. Financially this is one of many failure modes that businesses fall into. If I'd known what its future was going to look like back in 2006 and understood why I really created it, I...
