#25: Gathering map data and content and moving to Brighton

Brighton Dynamic

from The Skiff

We made it to 25 editions of Brighton Dynamic! It would be great to hear what you'd like from the next 25.

What should we do more of? What should we do less of? Is there anything you'd like us to do that's completely different?

In this 25th edition of Brighton Dynamic:

  • You'll hear how Dave Pereira Gurnell helps people gather data using his "survey monkey with maps" tool.
  • You'll discover a content gathering SaaS, with Brighton based founders, that grew to 1,100 customers before selling last year.
  • Where to find local events to meet creative, technical & business folk in the area.

Meet Dave Pereira Gurnell

Dave Gurnell is a director of Cartographer, an engineer and product person. Dave shares his journey moving from Birmingham to Brighton and from freelancing to running a small business.

You'll learn how he:

  • First started programming
  • Previously worked in academia and startups
  • Became a freelancer and now works with a team of freelancers
  • Finds teaching and training extremely satisfying
  • Is currently finding product management most challenging

Dave talks about how he loves programming and will find it very difficult to leave it behind if his business grows significantly.

Check out Gather Content

Alice Deer, founder and CEO of GatherContent lives in Brighton.

Here's how Alice describes GatherContent's mission:

"solving the painful content operations problem - and really helping organizations get on-brand, accurate and optimized content out to market, at scale."

Alice and her two cofounders grew the team to 17 people serving 1,100 customers.

  • Well over £1 million a year revenue.
  • Public sector customers include NHS, UK Government, Australian Government and various top universities.
  • Big private sector bands including VW, Intel, MailChimp, Dell and Ogilvy.

Ten years after founding the business they got an offer they couldn't refuse from a company with over 550 employees around the world.

GatherContent was doing great when they sold in early 2022 with over £1 million cash in the bank. The three co-founders owned most of the company with employees owning around 5% through an EMI option scheme.

Alice stayed on after the acquisition to continuing the mission. Being on the executive team of a multinational business valued at $600 million gives her the resources to make an even bigger difference.

GatherContent is currently ranked 7th on our list of successful Sussex SaaS. Know some we're missing? Disagree with the rank? Hit reply to let us know.

Brighton Dynamic from The Skiff I built a thing as fun side project at Urlbox. It's a fresh perspective on the web. A way to explore the top one million homepage screenshots. You can zoom, pan and click to navigate. It's called One Million Screenshots. There are far fewer than one million screenshots in this image There are a surprising number of Sussex based websites among the top one million. For me, browsing around was a little like taking a walk around Brighton and occasionally bumping...

a nostalgic video of when we first got the keys to the The Skiff

Brighton Dynamic from The Skiff This week the first company I started will be 18 years old. Over these 18 years, the company has generated over £2 million in revenue. Despite this, it’s never turned a significant profit or distributed a dividend. On paper, its age might seem like the most impressive thing about it. Financially this is one of many failure modes that businesses fall into. If I'd known what its future was going to look like back in 2006 and understood why I really created it, I...
