#26: Creative firsts doing good

Brighton Dynamic

from The Skiff

This week we're running a survey at The Skiff.

We're gathering the views of as many members as possible on what's going well and what needs improvement. So far a third of members have participated including:

  • 5 small business owners
  • 10 remote working employees
  • 14 freelancers/independent consultants
  • 13 people working in software development
  • 11 people working in digital, media and tech but not writing code
  • 4 people working outside of digital, media and tech

This is just the start of a conversation.

We'll be spending the whole day on Friday talking to other members to help decide what improvements to prioritise.

In this 26th edition of Brighton Dynamic:

  • You'll hear how Kelly Smith's creative agency was among the first b Corps.
  • You'll discover one of Brighton's first SaaS businesses that continues to do good.
  • Where to find local events to meet creative, technical & business folk in the area.

Meet Kelly Smith

Kelly Smith is a director of creative agency Neo. Kelly shares her journey from journalism and content marketing to projects with social and environmental purpose.

You'll learn how she:

  • Helps clients let go of the old ways of working.
  • Makes sure difficult conversations aren’t avoided.
  • Is unearthing what the South Downs are really about.

Kelly talks about how moving to Brighton was a catalyst, pulling her away from her previous career.

Check out Create

In 2000, Simon Kimber set out to build a content management system that would enable his clients to add their own content to the websites he was developing for them.

In 2001 it became a business "DoYourOwnSite" and by 2005, Simon’s wife, Rebecca, joined the company to help support the hundreds of customers who were choosing Simon’s platform to make their own website. Rebecca became CEO in 2007 growing the team and leading the rebrand to Create.net.

Over 30,000 people have now made websites using Create.

Create remains a local business that epitomises what it means to make an extended commitment to their customers, their team and the planet.

They've been long term supporters of flexible working and went 100% remote in 2020. They also switched to working 4 days a week and participated in a University of Sussex study to monitor the impact:

"Spoiler Alert: It was good for everyone's mental well being, stress levels and we still get lots done!"
- Rebecca on LinkedIn

The company has been carbon neutral for years. A founding partner in the 1 million tree pledge, Create has planted over 391,000 trees.

Create is currently ranked 8th on our list of successful Sussex SaaS. Know some we're missing? Disagree with the rank? Hit reply to let us know.

Also let us know if you're a customer of Create. Jon would love to ask you a few (easy!) questions.

Brighton Dynamic from The Skiff I built a thing as fun side project at Urlbox. It's a fresh perspective on the web. A way to explore the top one million homepage screenshots. You can zoom, pan and click to navigate. It's called One Million Screenshots. There are far fewer than one million screenshots in this image There are a surprising number of Sussex based websites among the top one million. For me, browsing around was a little like taking a walk around Brighton and occasionally bumping...

a nostalgic video of when we first got the keys to the The Skiff

Brighton Dynamic from The Skiff This week the first company I started will be 18 years old. Over these 18 years, the company has generated over £2 million in revenue. Despite this, it’s never turned a significant profit or distributed a dividend. On paper, its age might seem like the most impressive thing about it. Financially this is one of many failure modes that businesses fall into. If I'd known what its future was going to look like back in 2006 and understood why I really created it, I...
