They Thought We Were Gone - Why You Shouldn’t Stay Silent

Brighton Dynamic

from The Skiff

I heard something troubling recently – twice, from two different people.

They thought The Skiff had closed, or that we’d changed hands during the pandemic, like other workspaces that didn’t make it.

Bonkers, right? The truth is, The Skiff’s in the best shape it’s been in over five years. Honestly, I think it’s better now than when we had a bigger space.

We’re actually plotting what version 5.0 of The Skiff might look like. Next year will mark the company’s 20th anniversary – and 18 years since we first opened a coworking space. It’s also when our current 10-year lease comes to an end.

Reports of The Skiff's death are greatly exaggerated!

But… I get why they thought that. I’ve been terrible at keeping people updated.

It’s been 7 months since I last emailed this list, and even longer since we changed anything on The Skiff’s website or social channels.

The last public post I made about The Skiff? Back in February, on Bluesky! (Which, let’s face it, is only slightly more likely to be seen than anything on the awful place Twitter has become.)

Why This Matters (for SaaS too)

It’s easy for me to say, “The Skiff’s fine,” and focus on other things. Like helping a 4th UK-based SaaS hit $83,333 MRR – that’s $1M annual run rate. 🎉

But here’s the thing: None of the SaaS I’ve helped would have done as well without sending regular emails to the people who wanted to hear from them.

I sign up for new tools all the time, hoping they’ll remind me they exist right when I need them. It’s the same with coworking spaces.

How to do better than me?

Send that email you’ve been putting off.

If you want help, there’s an event next month I wish I could go to:

MicroConf Growth Retreat in London 14th to 16th May

Brighton’s own Laura Roeder, founder of Paperbell, will be sharing How to Build a High-Converting Email Machine for Your SaaS.

Brennan Dunn, who literally wrote the book on smart email automation, will be there too, plus many other brilliant SaaS founders.

I highly recommend it. I’ve travelled across Europe for events by this team – they’re worth it.

Because I missed the early bird deadline, they kindly gave me a £100 Promo Code to share:

Use code JON100 when you buy your ticket.

Get your ticket here. If you go and don’t find it worth the time or price, I’ll personally give you a day of my time to help with your business.

No kickbacks here - I just want to see more successful SaaS in Sussex.

Jon

PS If you’ve read this far and want to be part of the conversation about The Skiff 5.0, I’d love to hear from you.

You’re also very welcome to join us for our monthly Skiff Drinks this Friday, 25th April from 5pm.

An interest in software businesses isn’t required - only around 50% of Skiff members work in that world.

a nostalgic video of when we first got the keys to the The Skiff

Brighton Dynamic from The Skiff This week the first company I started will be 18 years old. Over these 18 years, the company has generated over £2 million in revenue. Despite this, it’s never turned a significant profit or distributed a dividend. On paper, its age might seem like the most impressive thing about it. Financially this is one of many failure modes that businesses fall into. If I'd known what its future was going to look like back in 2006 and understood why I really created it, I...
