The only billion-dollar company I'm comfortable depending on

Brighton Dynamic

from The Skiff

Most billion-dollar companies make me nervous.

That’s especially true when a small business has to depend on one of them.

But for more than a decade, almost all my income has flowed through one billion-dollar company before reaching me. Four of the SaaS businesses I helped reach $1 million in annual recurring revenue used it. The Skiff has collected £1.95 million in coworking membership fees through it too.

That company is Stripe.

So when they invited me to become a Stripe Community Builder for Brighton, I said yes.

That means I’ll be organising a new regular Stripe Brighton Community meetup, bringing together people using Stripe to build, sell, and get paid online.

The first one is on Monday 1st June, 6:30 to 8:30pm at The Skiff

It’s free to attend. Stripe is covering the food, drink, and a venue fee for The Skiff. There’s only room for 30 people at this first event.

This is a bit different from other events at The Skiff. It’s so commercial it even has a huge company’s name in the title. I’m not usually a fan of that kind of thing.

But Stripe has been unusually useful to the small businesses I care about. And they seem to understand how to support communities without turning them into sales events.

If you previously enjoyed Open Coffee Sussex, DevNest, Sussex Founders, or LTV Conf events I ran, this should feel familiar: good people, useful conversations, food and drink, and a shared interest in doing business on the internet.

Brighton Dynamic from The Skiff "What's a project you're excited about right now?" It's one of the best questions you can ask when you meet someone in almost any context. It beats "So, what do you do?" every time, and you're far more likely to remember the answer. I love asking it when I meet people at The Skiff, at meetups, or at conferences. I’m curious to hear your answer to that question. So...What’s a project you’re working on that you’re excited about? I’ll go first. I’m currently (and...

Brighton Dynamic from The Skiff I’ve been reading the updated and expanded edition of one of my favourite books, Deploy Empathy. It’s a practical guide to interviewing customers that I often recommend to clients. Though it’s written for people building software products, its lessons apply to any business. The new edition introduces the Four Forces model from Jobs-to-be-Done theory. It got me thinking about reframing what I've learned from talking to people like you when considering coworking:...
