Who did you have lunch with last week? (8 people I wish I had had lunch with)

Published about 1 year ago • 4 min read

You love Brighton for it's great pubs, cafes and restaurants. Lunch is the highlight of my day when I work in the city.

I've recently enjoyed Bow Buns at The Pond and a Vegan Sushi Burrito at Happy Maki. But the food is never the best bit of lunch. It's always more about spending time hanging out with like minded people.

Last week I enjoyed lunch with someone I've not seen this year and someone I'd not previously met in person. It was great!

But I'm kicking myself for missing a lunch last Wednesday.

I could have taken a packed lunch to Brighton, grabbed a Sainsbury's value meal or picked up my favourite takeaway for it. Instead I stayed at home trying to work through my todo list. :(

Fortunately, Paul Silver made the right choice and he also took notes!

Here are 8 people you and I could have met last Wednesday:

  • Becky Miller, who works as a Service Designer at Defra.
  • Stuart Wallace, a freelancer making healthcare apps (and games on the side).
  • James Turner, a developer who's building OrderWhizz.
  • Chetan Padia, who's been working on Clockwork Dog.
  • Joyce Lo, a motion graphics designer who is moving into journalism.
  • Ben Edwards, who's been a web developer for 29 years.
  • Alice Dewar-Mills, an experienced commercial director now providing fractional support to small, growing companies.
  • Jo Harrison is a freelance graphic designer and illustrator.

Each of them shared a project they have worked on while the 25-strong audience tucked into their own choice of lunch. You can find out what they shared in the full write up Paul has published on The Skiff's blog.

This was The Skiff's regular Show & Tell. 25 members of The Skiff were there. The next one is on 19th April but you don't have to wait until then.

As a member of The Skiff every day has elements of Show & Tell - especially over lunch. Listen to what members have to say about that in part 2 of our new audio project:

The Skiff Board Games Night — Fri 31st 7pm onwards — The Skiff

It would be great to get some new faces along to Games Night, there’s a whole host of super easy but fun games if you’re new, and it’s a great way to meet other Skiff mates!

We have a cool selection of games and people to explain how they work, co-op games, social deduction games, drink friendly party games, all the games!

Feel free to bring along some drink or a friend, and any games you have that you want to try and teach to people :)

If you haven’t been along before or don’t really play games but are keen for a social, then you’ll have a great evening. The games range from 3 players up to 10+ and are all super easy to learn :)

We’ll kick off at 7 but feel free to come along later, people tend to filter in and slowly join in.

Planning ahead for May:

People, Plant, Pint meetup — Thurs 18th May, 6pm-9pm - The Walrus

Come and meet others interested in the Net Zero, Bcorp and Environmental space! Two members of The Skiff felt this was so good they recommended I add this now.

That's all for this week,

Jon

Brighton Dynamic from The Skiff Yesterday was the 17th birthday of the company that became The Skiff Ltd's. It took ~2.5 years before the company opened a coworking space so we get to have two birthdays a year. By many measures, the last month has been the best we've had since before the pandemic. The space is buzzing with members new and old. The best thing this week was hearing a member, who joined less than a year ago, say this to a member who joined in 2016: "Yes we pay and have a...
