What do these 18 SaaS have in common?

I'd love to hear how many of them you recognise.

You can probably guess what they have in common. I'll share the answer next week.

I'll also be sharing the answer tomorrow...

Sussex Jobs

What's stopping you from moving to Brighton, staying in Brighton or ending your regular London commute?

It might be time for a different job.

Here are three things you can do to find one that has more of a Brighton-dynamic:

1) Sign up for job alerts from Wired Sussex

Wired Sussex provide the job board for technical and creative jobs in Brighton and Sussex.

All businesses that care about the local community advertise here first:

https://www.wiredsussex.com/jobs/

If you don't see a job for you there today, you can sign up for alerts.

There's also a section for Freelancers - you'll have an edge with the projects listed if you're local or planning to become local:

https://www.wiredsussex.com/briefs/

2) Check out People First Jobs

People First Jobs is the job board for companies that operate with principles of autonomy, balance, flexibility and transparency.

It was started by the founders of one of my favourite software companies. They kept the job board on after selling the software side of their business.

Here's why they started it:

"We believe that most job boards have it wrong. Instead of searching for a role, you should seek out a company. This is a new kind of job board, focused on helping job seekers find companies who put people first."

There's a good chance that if a company advertises here they won't have any problem with you living and working in Brighton:

3) Get to know local businesses

I very much agree with the approach of seeking out a company rather than role.

In my experience, many of the best jobs in smaller businesses don't get advertised on job boards. And when jobs are advertised on job boards, the best candidate often knows the company already.

A few ways you can start getting to know local businesses:

  • Go to events their team attends.
  • Subscribe to newsletters and follow them on social media.
  • Hang out with them at coworking spaces they work from.

If you don't enjoy doing all those things with them, applying for a job with them might not be such a good idea.

Brighton Dynamic is going to start doing much more to help you learn about local businesses. And it'll also be useful if you're looking for local freelance work and/or customers of your products and services.

Brighton Dynamic from The Skiff I heard something troubling recently – twice, from two different people. They thought The Skiff had closed, or that we’d changed hands during the pandemic, like other workspaces that didn’t make it. Bonkers, right? The truth is, The Skiff’s in the best shape it’s been in over five years. Honestly, I think it’s better now than when we had a bigger space. We’re actually plotting what version 5.0 of The Skiff might look like. Next year will mark the company’s 20th...

Brighton Dynamic from The Skiff I built a thing as fun side project at Urlbox. It's a fresh perspective on the web. A way to explore the top one million homepage screenshots. You can zoom, pan and click to navigate. It's called One Million Screenshots. There are far fewer than one million screenshots in this image There are a surprising number of Sussex based websites among the top one million. For me, browsing around was a little like taking a walk around Brighton and occasionally bumping...
